Reverie

Reverie is a short film about a young girl overcoming the death of her mother. Set within her own make-belief dreamscape, the film centers around her battle and struggle with a shadow-like entity representing the five stages of grief.

For this project, my team put me in charge of choreographing and boarding the big fight between Dawn and Anger, ending with the Reverie being taken over.
While most of the film is 2D animated, the layout and weapons are rendered in 3D, and I was told to keep them vague as those assets were still being developed.

When figuring out the fight sequence, one of the struggles we faced was how we wanted Anger, the dog, to attack. For early concepts, I suggested a more goopy-like structure, with the creature being able to shapeshift with multiple heads. We decided to go in a more solid direction, where Anger felt more like a tangible tank. A big rock that takes a lot of hits. I looked up a lot of references of quadruped fight scenes in media and suggested for some flare we could have Anger breath blue flames to give it a unique touch. We wanted Dawn to cycle through multiple weapons while keeping the fight a little over a minute, which proved challenging because the team wanted to create a bunch of cool moments.

We quickly realized that the fight was the star of our film, and delegated more time so that we could really make the confrontation between Dawn and Anger shine. Here are a few thumbnails I created to present to my directors. They helped us figure out and visualize the direction we wanted to head towards. During meetings we discussed a lot of anime and showed examples of other fight scenes to gain a better idea and vision of where we wanted the fight to go visually.

I was brought onto this project to help choreograph the fight scene, which would be the main conflict in this animated short film. I worked closely with the directors as they described key visual attacks they wanted me to incorporate.
